Economics Jazz Live XXIII 2017

The first Economics Jazz concert was started on November 16th 1987, when some students who were supported by a junior lecturer at the Faculty of Economics UGM, A. Tony Prasetiantono, held the first concert called Economics Jazz Live. It was held at Kridosono Sportshall Yogyakarta, with Karimata (Candra Darusman, Erwin Gutawa, Aminoto Kosin, Denny TR and Aldy) on stage, as well as a young singer Ruth Sahanaya, and saxophonist legend (the late) Embong Rahardjo.

Economics Jazz once changed its name to UGM Jazz when the Rector of the university wished this event to be held under the university (not the faculty anymore) in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The name of the event then back to Economics Jazz again when the concert was held again by the faculty.

In 2011, for the first time Economics Jazz invited international jazz musicians. Michael Paulo, a U.S. saxophonist from California, was the first international musician performing at Economics Jazz. Some great jazz musicians have been performed, such as David Benoit (2012), Casiopea 3rd (2013), Lee Ritenour and Phil Perry (2014), Dave Koz (May 2015), Casiopea 3rd again (November 2015), and Peabo Bryson (2016). In 2015, Economics Jazz was held twice due to the special celebration of 60 anniversary of the Faculty of Economics and Business (the new name of the faculty), Universitas Gadjah Mada.

This year, legend jazz singer Patti Austin, a Grammy Award winner in 2008, will perform with jazz pianist David Benoit. It would be a milestone to this event. As experienced in the last seven gigs, Economics Jazz will always invite top world’s jazz musicians to meet its vision as “The #1 Jazz Concert on Campus in Indonesia”.
